Dr Supriya Bansal’s ‘Bhima’s Ladle‘ is a graphic novel based on a mythological premise set in contemporary times. Thirteen-year-old Aru’s idol is the Pandava Prince, Bhima, who excelled at both wrestling and the art of cooking. Aru dreams of becoming a great wrestler, just like Bhima.
One day, Aru accidentally discovers Bhima’s ladle, a magic ladle infused with astounding powers of culinary creativity. How do his dreams become successful? What role does Bhima’s ladle play in his journey? How does Aru help fulfil his father’s catering order? Where does true magic lie?
As a reader, I wished I owned this enchanting ladle to restore order to my chaotic kitchen. The author successfully blends intrigue, mysticism, and suspense, ending with a meaningful life lesson for children. The vibrant illustrations are out of this world, and the narration is captivating. The author’s style of writing is descriptive and evocative. To nitpick, I wish the font were bigger and the story spanned over more pages to increase on-shelf visibility.
Readers, regardless of age will enjoy this book. Personally, the book brought back memories of the Amar Chita Katha comics I binged on when I was a child. Bhima’s ladle is a delightful read!
